Isaac Israels lives between 1916 and 1934 in his house at the Konrad inginnegracht in The Hague. He makes many trips to Italy, Switzerland, France and the Dutch East Indies. But he always returns to Haagje.
His large studio, two storeys high, connected to the house by a long corridor. In this passage he sold, as a 16-year-old boy, his first painting, a panel of military trumpet blowers. H.W. Mesdag came to visit his friend Jozef Israels and saw hang this painting. It still belongs to the Mesdag Collection in The Hague.
The last ten years of his life Isaac painted many portraits. In many cases, the companies who want to surprise their director, for forty years in service. The universities of Groningen and Utrecht immortalized professors. Friends are painted; the painter Marius Bauer, female champion Aletta Jacobs, composer Alexander Voormolen and architect Jan Wils. And of course many women, finally, the most popular topic of Isaac Israels! Matahari actresses Gretchen Lo bo-Braakensiek and Fie Carelsen and women whose name we (still) do not know. With great precision, the faces, the raised painted hair and dress.
