Jacob Smits
1856-1928
Jacob Smits was born in Rotterdam in 1856, he died in
Achterbos, near Mol in Belgium in 1928.
At first he worked in his father’s decoration-studio, than
he studied at the Artschool in Rotterdam and later on at the
Artschool in Brussels (Belgium) and Munich (Germany).
In 1882 Jacob Smits settled in Amsterdam. He was not only a
painter, also a draughtsman and an etcher. One of his first
important orders was the decoration of the entrance-hall
of the Museum Boymans-van Beuningen in Rotterdam.
For some time he was director of the School for Technical Education
and Decoration in Haarlem.
Jacob Smits regularly painted in Drente and in Limburg. He was in
friendly contact with Anton Mauve and A. Neyhuys.
In 1889 he left for Achterbos in Belgium, where he stayed till his
death in 1928. In Achterbos and surroundings he painted the country
and the poor peasants.
His work can be found in museums in Antwerp, Brussels, Kortrijk,
Luik, Brugge (Belgium) etc.
