Cornelis Theodorus Maria "Kees" van Dongen was born
in Delfshaven (now part of the municipality of Rotterdam)
and died in Monaco in 1968.
He was a pupil of the Rotterdam Academy of Fine Art.
He was a painter as well as a sculptor and ceramist.
Kees van Dongen made oilpaintings, watercolours, pastels,
drawings and lithographs.
Above all Van Dongen became famous for his portraits and
female nudes, but he was equally admired for his paintings of
landscapes, townviews and flowers.
Kees van Dongen was a vivid colorist.
He lived and worked in Delfshaven until 1897 when he left for
Paris. He became French citizen, lived mainly in Paris but
frequented Monaco where he lived later in life and where he died.
His work was exhibited many times all over the world.
Many of his paintings are in various museums world wide
or privately owned.
