Raoul Dufy
1877-1953

Raoul Dufy was born in Le Havre (France) the 3rd of July 1877,
he died in Forcalquier (the French Alps) March 23rd, 1953.
The Dufy family had nine children, of which Raoul, his younger
brother Jean and 5 sisters became painter. Raoul studied at the
Ecole Municipale des Beaux Arts in Le Havre where Othon Friesz and
Georges Braque also studied. He obtained a study allowance and
in 1900 he went to Paris where he studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts
and in the atelier of Léon Bonnat. He was inspired by the impressionists,
by the light and sparkling colours of Manet and Van Gogh, the dancing
scenes by Toulouse Lautrec and Raoul Dufy did not hesistate to follow
these artists. He went to the United States in 1937 where he was a
member of the Carnegie Prize Jury.
He suffered from reumatism and after 1940 he settled in Nice
(the South of France). Dispite his painfull disease he continued to work.
Raoul Dufy had numerous exhibitions and publications and his works are
to be seen in museums all over the world.
