Karel Appel
1921-2006

Christiaan Karel “Karel” Appel was born on April 25th, 1921 in Amsterdam.
He was a student at the National Art Academy in Amsterdam.
He lived and worked in Amsterdam, Paris and New York.
Together with, amongst others, Corneille, A. Jorn and E. Brands he founded the
COBRA-group in 1949.
He paints, makes watercolours and drawings (also in pen and pastel), etchings,
gouaches and wallpaintings. His first exhibition was held in 1946 in the
Museum of Modern Art (Stedelijk Museum) in Amsterdam.
His work was shown at hundreds of exhibitions worldwide and his work is on view
in all the larger and well known musea all over the world.
Karel Appel is still active and working.
