Gustave de Smet
1877-1943
Gustaaf De Smet was born in Gant 1877, he died in Deurle 1943, Belgium.
Brother of painter Leon de Smet. Student at the art-school in Gant.
Post-impressionistic painter - luminist - later expressionist.
Gustaaf De Smet belonged to the second generation of the School of
Sint Martens-Latem. Painter of landscapes, interiors and still lives.
During the war of 1914-1918 Gustaaf De Smet stayed in the Netherlands
where he was introduced to the German and Dutch expressionists.
In Deurle there is a Gustaaf De Smet museum.
Works in museums of Antwerp, Bruges, Brussels, Gant and Ostend.
