Dutch Painters & Belgian Painters (223)

1870-1956

Edmond Paul Marie Verstraeten was born in Waasmunter, February 16th, 1870, he died there on September 16th, 1956 in Belgium. He was educated in the Latin-Grecian Humaniora (retorica) at Sint-Niklaas in Belgium. Franz Courtens encouraged him to study the art of painting. He married Augusta Reynaert in 1896, they had ten children. They lived in Waasmunster on the top of a hill in an impressionistic surrounding with lots of beech and fir-trees. He was a philosophic, nonconformist man who loved nature in an almost religious manner, he had a kind of pantheistic view of life. Edmond Verstraeten was first of all an artist, he painted in a pointillistic, impressionist and luministic tryle.
