James Ensor was born in Ostend (Belgium) in 1860, he died in Ostend in 1949. Leading figure of the Impressionist years 1880 - 1890 and forerunner of Expressionism. Painter, sketcher, etcher of landscapes, marines, still lives, satirical and humorous subjects. He showed a personal impressionism that turned into an art of phantasy.
BATHING WOMEN” (Baigneuses) 1916 88 x 100 cm Painting has wavy and curly lines.. Oil-paint on unprepared linen, whereby the oil has been absorbed by the material, producing a “fresco” effect. Signed at the lower right and at the back.
