Jean Theodoor "Jan" Toorop was born in Poerworedjo (Dutch Indies) on December 20st, 1858. He died in the Hague (Holland) March 3rd, 1928. Father of the artist Charley Toorop. Student of the Technical University in Delft, the artschool in Amsterdam and Brussels. He lived in Holland, Belgium, France and The United Kingdom. The summers he used to spend in Domburg (Zealand, Holland). Jan Toorop was a very gifted draughtsman and painter with an absolute unique style. He painted, made etchings, drawings and lithographs of faces, portraits, nudes, he made murals, was a stained glass artist and an engraver. Jan Toorop had exhibitions in Amsterdam, The Hague, Rotterdam etc. Works in possession of all big Dutch museums.
