Jean Dufy

1888-1964

Jean Dufy, born in 1888 in Le Havre, France, he died on May 12th, 1964 at Boussay, two months after the death of his wife Ismérie. He was the seventh of eleven children. His father was a talented amateur musician. He was the younger brother of painter Raoul Dufy. After his military service, in 1912, he moved to Paris where he belonged to the group on Derain, Braque, Picasso and Apollinaire. His first works are rather dark of colour. For 30 years he worked as a painter on porcelain at the famous ateliers of Théodore Haviland in Limoges, France. He won a golden award at the International Exhibition of Decorative Arts in 1923. Noted painter of flowers, animals, circus-scenes. His work "Le Cirque" with fierce red, blue, black, yellow and white colours is a typical example of his style. Exhibitions and works by Jean Dufy can be found in museums all over the world.
