Dutch Painters & Belgian Painters (244)
Willem Koekkoek
1839-1895
Willem Koekkoek was the son and pupil of his father, the marine painter Hermanus Koekkoek sr. He is the only one of the large family of painters that specialized in the Dutch town-views, his big and famous example was Cornelis Springer. Willem Koekkoeks’ paintings are a combination of historic reconstructions and phantasie. Painter of town- views with figures in summer- and wintertime. His work was especially appreciated outstide Holland because it appealed to the idyllic ideas people had about the old, pitoresque Dutch towns and villages. His works are in museums in The Hague, Rotterdam and Cleve (Germany).
